One of our core values at thryver is gratitude.
Why? Because it completely changes the mindset of a person or a culture. I know. The people who seem to be naturally grateful are a rare breed. I was very good at seeing what is wrong with me, with others and the world around me. I was great at discontentment which meant I was also great at being unpleasant and very good at being depressed. (In case you’ve never tried it, depression sucks. Try to avoid attitudes that can lead to it.)
It pays to keep you grumbling!
Your comments on our recent post-election post revealed a frustration with people complaining without actually working to solve problems. News outlets make money by keeping you stirred up with anger and anxiety. Our tendency is to go back and consume more and more of it.
Do you want to change your life, your career, your relationships, your health? Then be grateful. It’s hard to grumble while you’re being grateful. According to Inc. Magazine, gratitude can:
- increase willpower,
- keep you calm and
- boost employee morale.
Jessica Stillman cites an example from a study where people wrote down 3 things they were thankful for each day for 21 days. The emotional well-being from that 21-day exercise persisted for six months! Just imagine if you started each day that way.
Gratitude is rare if experienced as a spontaneous emotion. In fact, it is the most short-lived emotion on the planet. But you can make it a regular discipline. — something that you pro-actively do on purpose.
Leading up to thanksgiving, we’ll offer daily insights into the art and discipline of gratitude.
thryver Gratitude Tip #1
BEFORE YOUR FEET HIT THE FLOOR
Exercise gratitude every day before you even get up. I start each morning by thinking of something I’m grateful for in 5 categories:
For God (if you have one and he/she is a good god)
For spiritual blessings (if you are a spiritual person)
For wonders of our planet and the cosmos (It’s amazing!)
For relational blessings
For physical blessings – either bodily and/or material
Where does work fit into those categories?
Well, here’s 2 fun ways.
